When I was an undergraduate at UW-Madison in the mid 70's, I used to pull down and read editions of the CIA organized "Translations of Chinese Radio Broadcasts," which were in bound, hard copy in the stacks of the Memorial Library. I still remember one translation I read which was a history of the Spanish American War. It was clear from the broadcast, that the creators of the piece were analogizing the US-Soviet conflict of that time to the Spanish American War, but with the USSR in the role of the US and the US in the role of Spain. China considered the USSR to be the rising power and the US -- even back then -- to be in decline.
