Kehlmann is one of the best contemporary German writers IMO and this novel combines the horrors of that war from below with the fate of the eponymous Tyll Eulenspiegel (Owlsmirror) - a folk (anti) hero in the German language / dialect family.
Recommended in German and the fine English translation.
Hi @KaiserKuo. The best novel I have read recently set in the 30 years war is Daniel Kehlmanns Tyll.
