Hi - Elizabeth in Tasmania Australia - appreciative of your perspective - will help me when I speak with people who cling to old 'paradigms' - mainly those that relate to the unquestioned hegemony of the US and its close - mainly - English speaking allies resting on a colonial past that is no longer held dear by most of the world.

It is easy for people to hold onto old ways of seeing the world - not everyone likes to challenge themselves in that way but - I do feel that Australia itself could acknowledge a great debt to China for its ultimate victory over the Japanese in WW2 being a good part of the reason the allies were able to claim victory in the Pacific. Credit where credit is due to the amazing effort put into defeating them on the mainland of China.

We put too much emphasis on the world reflecting our values rather than acknowledging the differences that should be better appreciated.

It would be interesting and worth some additional study to find out why the state-led (or at least state-influenced) development succeeded in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, but led to disaster in places like Argentina. "Socialism with Chinese characteristics" produced growth, while "Arab socialism" only brought stagnation. I have a gut feeling that a leadership focused on growth gets better results than concentrating on the glory of a personal great caudillo (which is why I dislike the Trumpians as much as the mandated study of Xi Jinping Thought).
