This week on Sinica, I chat with Hazza Harding, a young Australian who began learning Chinese and made his way to China where he became a pop singer with hits on Chinese pop charts and a state media newscaster — and also lost his husband tragically, suffered through the COVID lockdowns while grieving for his loss.
This was a wonderful episode. So poignant. The shared experiences about China, both positive and negative, that you both discuss, will resonate with so many.
Thank you both for this. One of my favourite episodes, and I think a somewhat mournful elegy to a future-lost. I remember those days when it seemed humanity would win.
It reminded me of seeing Jessie J on 歌手2018. My heart swelled with the idea that music would unite us all, after all!
But aside from a flurry of people discovering amazing artists like 华晨宇, and 苏诗丁, I'm not sure it had a lasting impact.
I'm not even sure Jessie J saw it as anything more than a usual gig. Now, snagging an interview with her to find out if it even registered and see what she thought of the cross-cultural interactions would really prove your music cred, Kaiser!
